-- The Most Common Network Cable --

- Coaxial cable –

Coaxial network cable is one of the most commonly used network cables. This type of network cable known as'' coax '' in the 1880's was used to connects TV sets to home antennas. Coaxial cables consist of an inner cooper wire coated with insulation in order to be protected of electromagnetic interference. You can use two kinds of coax network cabling thinnet( 10 BASE2 standard) and thicknet(BASE 5). If you need to transfer data over longer distance, then you should use thicknet as its cable length reaches 500 meters. Thicknet is 1/2 inch thick and usually serves as a backbone to several thinnet based networks. These types of coax cables were mostly used when 10Mbps Ethernet was popular back in the 90's.

-Twisted Pair cable -

This type of network cabling is appropriate for home and corporate Ethernet networks. Twisted pair cable in the 90's was used for Ethernet starting with 10 Mbps and successfully improved into10 Gbps Ethernet most commonly used nowadays. This ethernet cable consists of 8 wires bond together in pairs as to decrease electromagnetic interference. There are two types of twisted pairs: Unshielded twisted pair(UTP) and Shielded twisted pair(STP).The Unshielded one is most frequently used as it consists of four pairs of thin cooper wires, color-coded and twisted together and covered into plastic jacket. There are different types of categories of UTP cabling but one that we often use is 5,5e and 6 which transfer rates over 1Gbps

- Optical Fiber Cables –

Another commonly used network cabling are the optical fiber cables. These network cables don't use metal wires to connect to a device but instead it transmits electrical signals. Fiber optic network cables are ideal for wide area (WANs) installations as they carry digital data signals in form of pulses of lights. The core of the fiber consist of one thin glass cylinder coated with several layers of glass. Two types of fiber optics exist on the market and that is the single mode cable(100 BaseBX ) and the multi-model(100 BaseSX)fiber cable that transfer information with high speed over long or short distances.
